Farken surges to world road mile title in Copenhagen

Robert Farken timed his challenge to perfection to win the men’s road mile at the World Athletics Road Running Championships Copenhagen 26, charging past Yared Nuguse in the closing stages to triumph in a world-leading German record of 3:51.80 on Saturday (19).

The German produced his decisive move at almost exactly the same point on the V-shaped Copenhagen course as Agathe Guillemot had done in the women’s race 20 minutes earlier, overhauling long-time leader Nuguse before powering towards the finish near Parken Stadium.

Farken’s 3:51.80 moved him to second on the world all-time list for the road mile, behind only Elliot Giles’ world record of 3:51.3. Nuguse held on for silver in a season’s best of 3:52.33, while Luxembourg’s Ruben Querinjean produced one of the surprises of the championships to take bronze in a national record of 3:52.77.

Nuguse had spoken before the race of challenging Giles’ world record and made his intentions clear from the gun. The Olympic 1500m bronze medallist immediately went to the front and quickly opened a small gap, his long stride stretching the field behind him into a V formation as they raced along Østerbrogade towards Trianglen. Jake Heyward was the closest pursuer, a stride or so back, with Farken settled in third.

Unlike the cagey women’s race before it, there was no waiting around. Nuguse continued to dictate the race as the runners swept towards the turnaround point, reached with about 2:15 on the clock. The distinctive course then sent the athletes back along Østerbrogade towards the final stretch past Parken.

As they emerged from the turn with about 600 metres remaining, the chase began in earnest. The advantage Nuguse had established in the opening stages gradually started to disappear as Farken and the athletes behind him began their long drive for home. Nuguse continued to press at the front, but Farken was visibly gaining with every stride.

Then, at almost exactly the same part of the course at which Guillemot had made her winning move in the women’s race, Farken swept past. Nuguse gritted his teeth and fought to stay with him, but Farken had timed his effort superbly. The 28-year-old pulled clear through the closing metres and charged across the line in 3:51.80.

It completed another significant step in the finest season of Farken’s career. The German finished sixth over 1500m at last year’s World Championships in Tokyo and has rewritten his national record books in 2026, clocking 3:30.09 for 1500m en route to a 3:46.82 mile in London in July. He had also finished 11th at the World Athletics Ultimate Championship in Budapest just six days before his Copenhagen triumph.

Nuguse, meanwhile, once again showed his strength on the roads. His 3:52.33 in Copenhagen gave him another global medal to add to his Olympic 1500m bronze.

Perhaps the biggest breakthrough, though, came from Querinjean. Better known as a steeplechaser, the 24-year-old has enjoyed an outstanding 2026 campaign. He took European steeplechase silver in Birmingham last month and later lowered his Luxembourg record to 8:05.36.

His bronze was also historic. It was the first global senior athletics medal won by a Luxembourg man since Josy Barthel’s 1952 Olympic 1500m gold.

Morocco’s Anass Essayi finished fourth in a PB of 3:53.28, with France’s Flavien Szot setting a national record of 3:53.44 in fifth. Oliver Hoare was sixth in an Australian record of 3:53.65, followed by Italy’s Pietro Arese in a PB of 3:54.37.
