Fall yard waste collection begins on Sept. 28

Edmonton residents will be able to have their excess yard waste collected every Monday starting on Sept. 28.

Residents with curbside waste collection can put out their yard waste every Monday from Sept. 28 to Nov. 23, the City said in a news release on Thursday.

The city recommends that residents set out yard waste in see-through plastic or double-ply paper bags. There are no limits on the number of bags per household, but each bag should be "light enough to lift with one arm."

Yard waste left at a residence by a contractor or landscaping service is also eligible for collection.

Yard waste can also be dropped off for free at Eco Stations and the Edmonton Waste Management Centre.

To curb the spread of Dutch elm disease, yard waste from elm trees will not be collected. Residents are asked to instead prune their elm trees during elm pruning season, between Oct. 1 and Mar. 31.

Elm trimmings can provide habitat for bark beetles that spread Dutch elm disease, putting more than 20 per cent of Edmonton's urban forest at risk.

Pruned elm wood must be burned immediately or taken to the Edmonton Waste Management Centre, at 250 Aurum Road NE, for safe disposal.
