Ensure less politics, propagation of national interests on college campuses: BJP to governing bodies

Samik Bhattacharya Kolkata: State BJP has asked college governing body members to ensure propagation of nationalist ideals on campuses and less involvement of students in politics. In an organisational meeting on Tuesday, the party warned the governing bodies against partisanship and misuse of power.While addressing members present at the meeting, in the presence of BJP national general secretary Sunil Bansal and the state education minister Jagannath Chattopadhyay, state BJP president Samik Bhattacharya said incidents like throwing jugs at teachers should not get repeated.“Politics has to be kept outside the colleges and minimal interference has to be ensured. While there will be students’ political wings, their activities should be controlled,” said a Bengal BJP neta present at the meeting. “There should not be any unauthorised interference in academic matters. There should not be any favouritism towards students or employees,” said the neta.In guidelines released on Tuesday, Bengal BJP stressed transparency, administrative discipline and compliance with govt and university regulations. Several BJP netas, MPs and MLAs have been appointed as presidents of governing bodies of govt-aided colleges.At the meeting, concerns were raised about allegations against previous governing bodies over financial discrepancies and failure to submit audit reports.Permanent teachers cannot be appointed without recommendations from the College Service Commission.
