Elections Canada reminds Chicoutimi-Le Fjord voters: Monday's byelection is federal

Federal byelection taking place on Monday separate from Quebec's fall provincial election

With Quebec's election campaign in full swing, Elections Canada is clearing up some confusion among voters in Chicoutimi-Le Fjord, where a federal byelection is taking place Monday.

In a social media post, the agency reminded voters that the federal byelection scheduled for Aug. 31 is separate from the provincial election taking place on Oct. 5.

Candidates in the Quebec riding will seek to replace former Conservative MP Richard Martel, who has been appointed to the Senate.

Martel, a past hockey coach who was first elected in 2018, narrowly won Chicoutimi-Le Fjord for the federal Conservatives in the last general election, with the Bloc Québécois and Liberal candidates a close second and third in a riding considered part of the separatist heartland.

The candidates running in the riding include Daniel Gobeil for the Liberals, Régis Gaudreault for the Conservatives, and Caroline Dubé for the Bloc Québécois.

Two other byelections are also taking place on the same day: one in the B.C. riding of North Vancouver-Capilano and the other in the Ontario riding of Beaches-East York.

Prime Minister Mark Carney has not yet called a byelection for Saint-Hyacinthe-Bagot-Acton in Quebec. The riding was represented by former Bloc Québécois MP Simon-Pierre Savard-Tremblay, who stepped down earlier this year to run in Quebec's provincial election with the Parti Québécois.
