Digital Citizenship Key to Responsible Tech Use
The second European Forum on digital citizenship education has concluded this week in Strasbourg. It brought together a wide range of stakeholders committed to strengthening democratic participation and responsible engagement in digital environments. Representatives from public authorities, education sector, civil society, youth organisations, and parent communities exchanged perspectives on how digital citizenship education can better respond to the realities of today's rapidly evolving technological landscape.
Throughout the forum, participants explored practical initiatives and innovative approaches to teaching and learning digital citizenship. Discussions addressed the growing influence of artificial intelligence in education, the protection of children's rights online, and the importance of fostering critical thinking, inclusion, and safe digital participation. The forum also underlined the essential role of parents and families in helping children and young people develop responsible and informed online behaviours.
The event provided an opportunity to identify concrete priorities for the action plan called to support the implementation of the Council of Europe Road Map for strengthening digital citizenship education 2027-31. Contributions from participants highlighted the need for closer cooperation between public, private and civil sectors.
The forum demonstrated a strong shared commitment to preparing learners and education professionals for the human rights based digital transformation and the growing impact of technology on societies. The forum outcomes will support the Council of Europe's ongoing work to promote democratic values, human rights, and active participation in the digital era.
