Democrats, Republicans in the House press agencies on potential AI election interference
WASHINGTON (TNND) — Lawmakers from both sides of the political aisle urged leaders of the Homeland Security and Justice, the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency and the Federal Election Commission (FEC) to work together to ensure election security as artificial intelligence advances.
New Jersey Democratic Rep. Josh Gottheimer and New York Republican Rep. Mike Lawler wrote about concerns regarding “chatbots” as the 2026 midterm elections approach.
“As millions of Americans rely on AI-driven tools to research the upcoming election, the accuracy and neutrality of these tools are now directly tied to the integrity of our democratic process,” they wrote in a letter to the agencies, according to The Hill newspaper.
They referenced a study conducted two years ago that stated AI chatbots often did not give accurate information when voters researched information about candidates before voting.
The study showed that over two-thirds of the AI models’ test responses were incomplete and they all “performed poorly” when it came to election information.
“These sources present an environment filled with unverified information, where anyone with an opinion can shape the narrative,” the letter reads. “By relying on this information, systems cannot reasonably present a full picture of unbiased information to voters.”
Lawler and Gottheimer urged the agencies to work together to make sure AI-threats to election integrity can be tackled.
