Delay the deployment of artificial intelligence (Voice of the people)
The breakneck pace of generative artificial intelligence development has greatly outrun our collective ability to control and govern it.
While the promise of AI dominates headlines, the mounting societal and environmental risks demand a profound and immediate slowdown. We must significantly delay the build-out of advanced artificial intelligence systems until comprehensive regulatory and safety frameworks are firmly established.
The current trajectory is unsustainable. We are deploying this powerful technology without a clear understanding of its long-term impacts on the labor market, data privacy and truth itself. The proliferation of hyper-realistic deepfakes is already destabilizing public trust and complicating our Democratic processes.
Furthermore, the massive energy and water consumption required to cool and maintain these gargantuan data centers represents an acute environmental crisis that undermines our ability to stop Climate Change.
Technological progresses should serve humanity, not outpace our capability to manage it safely. A deliberate pause on large-scale artificial intelligence expansions would allow policymakers and scientists the necessary time to build robust guardrails, establish international safety standards and address critical questions of copyright and bias.
We must prioritize caution over corporate competition before the technology evolves past the point of effective Human oversight.
Why are political attack ads all we see?
We will see more than enough campaign ads over the next few weeks.
Do we believe the attack ads? Do we believe socialism will take over from the extreme radical left? I would rather hear what a candidate is going to do than attack their opponent.
I don't want to hear them say they will lower home insurance costs and make things more affordable. Tell me how you are going to do that, when it has not been done the past few years. Give me details and not just say we will take a look at that.
Am I better than two, four or six years ago? Not really.
Also, don't complain if you don't vote. I along with many voters will do my voting by mail, which for some reason is opposed by some. Not sure why.
Fading Trump mystique? GOP Lakeland rally was packed
R. Bruce Anderson brought his class to our Oct. 1 rally at the Sun 'n Fun grounds and left wondering whether the Republican movement is fading ["As GOP puts on full-court press, is Trump's mystique fading?" Oct. 7].
Thousands of Polk families packed Lakeland Linder on a weekday to hear Vice President JD Vance and our candidates. Fading movements don't draw crowds like that a month before an election.
The numbers say the same thing. Polk Republicans outnumber Democrats by more than 60,000 voters. A new Mason-Dixon poll has Byron Donalds beating David Jolly 48 to 41 statewide and 55 to 33 in Central Florida. Sen. Ashley Moody leads DSA member Angie Nixon 50 to 40. Donalds has raised more than $134 million to Jolly's $16.7 million.
Our candidates are running to continue what Gov. Ron DeSantis built: keeping boys out of girls' sports, securing the border and lowering your taxes. That isn't a retreat. That's how you win.
Mystique is for columnists. We'd rather knock doors. Volunteer at polk.gop/volunteer, and vote early Oct. 19 to 31 or on Election Day, Nov. 3.
On my desk sits a small carving of three monkeys from ancient Japanese legend, suggesting ways to live harmoniously. Those basic principles could be good but are convoluted by Trump’s administration and are hurting America.
See No Evil – Many Republicans—the majority in Congress—cover their eyes and pretend they don’t see the critical problems they’re elected to solve. Nothing is done to help us as they hurry away, whistling in the dark.
Speak No Evil - The wealthy Cabinet certainly speaks no evil of this president. Instead, at each meeting they humiliate themselves, flattering him with lies. Lacking qualifications for their appointed positions and desperate to keep them, they only cover their mouths if someone utters an evil truth.
Hear No Evil – The president covers his ears to whatever he doesn't want to hear: He lost the 2020 election; America is no longer admired; his poll numbers have tanked; he’s losing his Iranian war; his building projects are illegal and corrupt; the national debt is astronomical and rising. Things might've worked better for Trump if he’d listened to wise counsel, hadn't allowed his colossal ego to generate crazy pronouncements, and hadn't blamed his boondoggles on others.
An idea for compromise on time change
Regarding the story "Clock fight pits science vs. politics. Disagreement persists on which time to adopt" [Oct. 12]:
Daylight saving time was initiated during World War I to save primarily coal used for lighting and heating. That has since been reargued that springing forward or falling back on hour in 24 twice a year makes a significant difference in our lives.
Arizona, Hawaii and the five major U.S. territories do just fine by never changing the base time.
Compromise should be an easy solution. Adjust the baseline time by ½ hour. Move the upcoming November time change back ½ hour instead of 1 hour and leave it there. Make the appropriate 1/2-hour adjustment in Arizona and others. I would call that a win-win.
