Councils given funds to help tackle rough sleeping

Local authorities in Cambridgeshire and Peterborough are being given a share of almost £1.75m in government funding to help tackle rough sleeping.

The money has been approved by Paul Bristow, the Conservative mayor of Cambridgeshire and Peterborough, with a view to giving people a route off the streets by Christmas.

It is part of the government's Rough Sleeping Programme.

"This funding will not only help change the lives of those being given somewhere to sleep but will also address key regional issues that lead to someone ending up in this position," said Bristow.

Money from the Rough Sleeping Programme can be used by local authorities to meet immediate needs, for prevention work, to help people into longer-term settled accommodation, and to provide support for those who have experienced long-term rough sleeping.

The amount each local authority will receive is based on rough sleeping data across the county:

East Cambridgeshire – £57,268

South Cambridgeshire – £147,591
