Carney signs onto AI and technology partnership with India and Australia
Joint release says officials aiming to meet early next year to 'take the initiative forward'
Prime Minister Mark Carney has had Canada launch a partnership with India and Australia on emerging technologies while at the G20 summit in South Africa.
The trilateral agreement aims to have the three democracies work together to diversify supply chains, use clean energy and help with further uptake of artificial intelligence.
The move comes as Canada resets its relationship with India after two years of strain related to the RCMP saying New Delhi has played a role in the murder and extortion of Canadian citizens.
In a joint statement released Saturday morning, the three countries announced their group would be called the Australia-Canada-India Technology and Innovation Partnership (ACITI).
"The initiative will draw on the natural strengths of the three countries and have an emphasis on green energy innovation and building resilient supply chains, including in critical minerals," the joint release said.
"The partnership will also examine the development and mass adoption of artificial intelligence to improve the lives of our citizens."
According to the release, the three countries agreed that officials should convene in the first quarter of 2026 "to take the initiative forward."
Carney is in Johannesburg for the G20 summit, where most leaders endorsed a joint declaration despite a U.S. boycott.
The statement includes language on climate change, women’s rights and the Middle East that the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump had pushed back on at various points this year.
