Canada explores closer EU ties as U.S. trade frictions grow
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney is exploring a new form of associate membership with the European Union as Ottawa seeks to reduce its economic dependence on the United States, The Wall Street Journal reported.
Officials are discussing a special status that would give Canada deeper access to the EU without full membership. The proposal could ease the movement of goods, services and workers in strategic industries including energy, artificial intelligence, defense and critical minerals.
For investors, closer integration could create opportunities in Canadian energy, mining, technology and infrastructure companies. It also may help businesses diversify supply chains as tariffs and political tensions disrupt trade between Canada and the United States.
The talks are said to cover underwater cables, data centers, cloud-computing facilities, satellite networks and infrastructure for exporting Canadian energy to Europe. Canada also is seeking visa-free work and residency privileges for its citizens in EU countries.
Carney has discussed the initiative with several European leaders, including French President Emmanuel Macron. The two are scheduled to meet later this month.
Any agreement would face significant political and regulatory obstacles. The EU historically has maintained strict membership rules, while its existing trade pact with Canada still has not been ratified by every member country, despite taking provisional effect nine years ago.DisclaimerContent provided by Seeking Alpha is intended for information purposes only, and that Seeking Alpha does not offer any personalist investment advice and is not a licensed securities dealer, broker, US investment adviser or investment bank.
