California Milk Advisory Board opens eighth year of accelerator program

TRACY, CALIF. – The California Milk Advisory Board (CMAB) and innovation consultancy VentureFuel have opened applications for the 2026 Real California Milk Excelerator, an accelerator program designed to help dairy-focused startups commercialize products, expand retail distribution and leverage artificial intelligence tools to scale their businesses. Applications are open through July 24.

Now entering its eighth year, the Real California Milk Excelerator has evolved beyond a traditional startup competition to focus on helping emerging food and beverage brands accelerate commercialization and growth through industry mentorship, retail connections and AI-enabled business tools.

The program, launched by CMAB in 2019, supports companies developing innovative dairy-based products and provides participants with mentorship, commercialization guidance, industry networking opportunities and funding support. Since its inception, more than 60 brands have participated, receiving more than $2.5 million in non-dilutive funding and access to a network of more than 100 executives across retail, manufacturing, venture capital and corporate innovation.

“California dairy has long been a catalyst for innovation,” said Bob Carroll, chief executive officer of CMAB. “The Real California Milk Excelerator gives entrepreneurs innovating with dairy the opportunity to turn bold ideas into successful businesses.”

The 2026 program includes both incubator and accelerator tracks. The incubator track is geared toward early-stage startups looking to establish a foundation for commercialization, while the accelerator track targets growth-stage companies with demonstrated market traction and revenue. Applicants will submit a single application and be placed in the track that best matches their stage of development and growth objectives.

Program participants will take part in a 10-week curriculum featuring mentorship, educational sessions and hands-on guidance from experts across the dairy, food and retail industries. Topics include product formulation, manufacturing, sales, marketing, retail strategy and commercialization.

A new emphasis for 2026 is the integration of AI-enabled sales, marketing, consumer insights and retail intelligence tools. According to program organizers, these resources are intended to help startups identify market opportunities, analyze consumer trends and optimize go-to-market strategies.

“The most successful food startups today combine product innovation with data-driven commercialization,” said Fred Schonenberg, founder and CEO of VentureFuel. “By integrating AI tools, retail expertise and strategic industry connections, the Real California Milk Excelerator helps entrepreneurs accelerate growth and compete more effectively in the modern food marketplace.”

The program supports innovation across a broad range of categories, including beverages, snacks, cultured dairy products, cheese, butter, functional foods, frozen desserts, nutrition products, personal care products and pet products made with dairy ingredients.

Past participants have expanded distribution into national retailers such as Whole Foods Market, Sprouts Farmers Market and Costco, while alumni brands including Smearcase, Petit Pot and Cheese Bits have used the program to accelerate growth and market visibility.

Accelerator participants will receive stipends to support their involvement in the program. The initiative will culminate in an in-person California showcase where companies will present products to industry leaders, retailers and investors. Members of the accelerator cohort also will compete in a live pitch competition, with up to four finalists receiving $30,000 in marketing support and the opportunity to compete for an additional $100,000 based on market performance over the following year.

CMAB said the program reflects California’s position as the nation’s leading milk-producing state and its ongoing commitment to fostering dairy innovation and value-added product development.
