Calgary man accused of threatening to kill Prime Minister Mark Carney
YouTube account linked to suspect had posted a death threat, RCMP say
A Calgary man has been arrested and charged in connection with allegations he threatened to kill Prime Minister Mark Carney.
Jamie Dacosta, 31, faces one count of uttering threats.
According to RCMP, its National Security Enforcement Team (INSET) received information in July that a YouTube account had posted a death threat against the prime minister.
Court records show the date of the alleged offence against Carney was between July 25 and July 26, 2026.
On Tuesday, Dacosta appeared in a Calgary courtroom over CCTV from the Calgary Remand Centre where he is being held.
He also has several other, unrelated charges before the courts, including extortion, three counts of uttering threats and wearing a disguise with intent, all connected to allegations involving an automotive business.
Defence lawyer Adriano Iovinelli noted that his client was denied bail last week on all charges by Justice Clarissa Pearce.
Iovinelli asked that the case return Friday to determine whether the Crown’s specialized prosecution unit would take over all of Dacosta’s files.
