Celebration turned into sombre reflection following the sudden passing of Duane Ward, an iconic and distinguished member of the Blue Jays' back-to-back World Series championship clubs.

Fans of the team woke up to Ward's stunning passing Sunday, one day after the franchise unveiled a statue commemorating the club's signature moments.

Per the Blue Jays, Ward, who was 62, died of natural causes.

Prior to Sunday's series rubber match against the Chicago White Sox, a moment of silence was held at Rogers Centre.

Ward was among many players from the championship seasons who had travelled to Toronto on Friday.

He was absent from Saturday's pre-game ceremony for the statue's unveiling.

A right-handed reliever, Ward teamed up with Tom Henke to form an elite and dominant tandem.

Dependable, reliable and fearless, Ward had all the attributes required in high leverage.

An all-star in 1993 when he led the American League with 45 saves, Ward forged a six-year stretch where he was among baseball's best relievers.

Ward ended his career with the Jays by recording 121 saves.

In 2020, Ward was inducted into the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame.

"It is with profound sadness that the Toronto Blue Jays mourn the passing of pitcher Duane Ward, one of the most accomplished and beloved relievers in franchise history,'' read a statement released by the franchise.

"Duane was a cornerstone of Blue Jays baseball, appearing in 452 games from 1986 to 1995 and helping define an era of excellence. A dominant force on the mound, Duane ranks among the franchise leaders in saves with 121 and remains one of the most reliable late-inning relievers the organization has ever known.

"Whether setting the stage in the eighth inning or closing out wins, he will be remembered for the role he played in some of the greatest moments in Blue Jays history.

"Duane will be deeply missed by our fans, and we extend our heartfelt condolences to his family. Duane will always be a cherished part of the Blue Jays family, and we will be forever grateful for his contributions to our organization and to baseball in Canada.
