Girona has launched a free summer program for people over 60 years old within the Sempre Acompanyats program, an initiative promoted by the City Council, the "la Caixa" Foundation, and the Red Cross to combat unwanted loneliness.
The rollout reaches all neighborhoods in the city and comes at a time when the program already serves 185 elderly people with the support of a technical team from the Red Cross, more than 39 local agents, and eight volunteers.
The fourth edition brings workshops and talks to all neighborhoods
Under the name of the fourth edition of "A l'estiu tota cuca viu" will offer free activities during the summer in various locations in Girona.
The program includes ballroom dancing workshops, crafts, crochet, painting, and costume jewelry. It also incorporates proposals designed to maintain daily activity and expand social relationships among participants.
In addition, the calendar includes activities for the elderly that connect with other recent initiatives in the city aimed at this same group.
The program combines health, relationships, and intergenerationality
The sessions include preventive and educational talks on pain management, hypertension, diabetes, emotions, first aid, mobile phone use, and artificial intelligence.
Not everything is focused on leisure.
The program organizes its activities into areas of personal care and well-being, meetings and relationships, expression and creativity, intergenerationality, and group workshops. This structure aims to reinforce the sense of community among people participating in different neighborhoods of Girona.
The city also maintains other measures aimed at the older population during the hot months, such as the impact of heat on those over 75 years old, a context in which these activities add community support and follow-up.
Currently, Sempre Acompanyats works with 185 elderly people thanks to the collaboration of a technical team from the Red Cross, more than 39 local agents, and eight volunteers.
