Albertans now have another month to apply for $100 energy rebate

Sept. 30 was original deadline; people now have until Oct. 31 to apply

The province is giving Albertans another month to apply for the $100 energy rebate, with a new deadline of Oct. 31.

The province made the announcement in a news release on Wednesday, which was originally supposed to be the final day to apply.

The government launched the program July 1 as a way to give Albertans more money in their pockets from the increased provincial revenues from high oil prices.

The one-time payment is open to Albertans over 18 who have filed their 2025 tax return and have a total household income of $225,000 or less.

About 3.4 million Albertans will receive $100 energy rebate from provincial government

Finance Minister Jason Nixon says more than 1.45 million Albertans have already applied for and received the rebate.

"By extending the deadline, we are giving more families the time they need to apply and receive real relief," Nixon said in the news release.

There had been complaints since the program launched of people having technical difficulties in applying. Premier Danielle Smith mused about extending the deadline during a town hall Saturday, after hearing about the issues some people had.

"That was a pretty good argument to me about why we might want to try to extend that portal," Smith said in Medicine Hat.

Smith says the province's new approach will help solve some of those online issues. Starting Oct. 1, the province is suspending its fuel tax until the end of the year, saving drivers 13 cents a litre.

The premier says if the province offers another rebate, the government would likely change the process for how people apply for and receive that money.

"We realized it didn't work well enough for enough people, so we're going to have to go through CRA next time," she said Saturday.
