AI Startup Cohere Targets $20 Billion Valuation in Funding Round
Artificial intelligence startup Cohere is in advanced talks to raise between $2 billion and $3 billion at a valuation of $20 billion, The Globe and Mail reported Friday (Sept. 11).
The deal could close as soon as next week, although it has not been finalized, and the terms could change, according to the report.
If the deal were to close at the reported figures, it would become the largest on record by a private Canadian startup and would make Cohere one of Canada’s most valuable tech companies, per the report.

Reached by PYMNTS, Cohere said in an emailed statement: “We don’t comment on speculation but can confirm that Cohere has seen strong inbound interest from investors as part of our Series E process. The level of engagement reflects broad confidence in our strategy, product momentum and global demand for sovereign AI. We’ll share full details once the process formally concludes.”
Cohere was valued at $7 billion in September 2025 when it raised an additional $100 million as part of the second close of a funding round. A month earlier, in August 2025, the company was valued at $6.8 billion when it raised $500 million in funding.
When announcing the second close, Cohere said in a blog post that it was scaling its operations across the North America, Asia-Pacific (APAC), and Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) regions to meet growing demand for secure and sovereign AI solutions.
Cohere said in the post that its AI models are designed to power agentic business operations and that its platform is purpose-built for businesses and governments that handle sensitive data. Its agents are active in the finance, healthcare, manufacturing, telecommunications, energy and government sectors.
Cohere Chief Financial Officer Francois Chadwick said in the September 2025 post that the strong investor demand in the second close endorsed the company’s momentum in deploying secure and sovereign AI for enterprises.
“We believe that Cohere’s AI solutions are meeting an ignored demand in the market for technology that truly improves the efficiency of businesses and governments, while keeping full control of their data in their own hands,” Chadwick said in the post.
