Peter Cullen, the esteemed Canadian voice actor known for his iconic portrayal of Optimus Prime, has passed away at the age of 85 at his home in Los Angeles.

This news comes from a family statement confirming that Cullen died peacefully on Wednesday, surrounded by family as reported by Briefly News.

A legacy of compassion and strength

Cullen first brought the beloved character of Optimus Prime to life in the original Transformers animated series back in 1984.

He continued to voice the character across seven major Hollywood films from 2007 to 2023, as well as several spin-offs. Cullen’s performance was deeply influenced by his older brother, a decorated US Marine and Vietnam War veteran.

In tribute to this guidance, Cullen shared a portion of his earnings from Optimus Prime with his brother throughout his life.

His achievements earned him a Daytime Emmy nomination for outstanding performer in an animated programme in 2011, and in 2023 he received a lifetime achievement award at the Children's & Family Emmy Awards.

A career that defined generations

Cullen's impactful voice extended well beyond Transformers. He lent his talents to numerous cherished characters over the past four decades, including the melancholic donkey Eeyore in The New Adventures of Winnie the Pooh, a role he reprised across various related shows, films, and games.

He also voiced KARR, the villainous counterpart to KITT in Knight Rider, produced the chilling sounds of The Predator in the 1987 film starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, and roared as King Kong in the 1976 remake.

His extensive animation catalog features characters from series such as Spider-Man, DuckTales, My Little Pony, Dungeons & Dragons, and Alvin & the Chipmunks, showcasing his remarkable versatility.

Cullen began his career in Canadian television and radio before transitioning to voice acting full-time, becoming a familiar face in mainstream entertainment, including on The Sonny & Cher Show.

As the world mourns the loss of this remarkable talent, Cullen leaves behind a legacy of creativity that has touched countless lives through the magic of his voice.
