47-year-old dies in T.C.H. crash in central Newfoundland

Tractor trailer driver in hospital with serious injuries

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police say a 47-year-old man died at the scene of a collision between a truck and a trailer on the Trans-Canada Highway in central Newfoundland on Tuesday.

Police responded to the crash just after 2:15 a.m. NT on Tuesday morning, according to a statement on Wednesday. The incident happened near Gullbridge — also known as Gull Pond Bridge, between Badger and South Brook.

The statement said both vehicles were on fire when police arrived.

The driver of the truck, a 47-year-old man travelling east, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to police.

The driver of a westbound tractor trailer was sent to hospital after suffering serious injuries. The driver is still under the hospital's care.

The police response closed a portion of the Trans-Canada Highway between Badger and South Brook for several hours on Tuesday.

Police said an investigation into the cause of the crash remains ongoing.
