2 roller-coasters at Canada's Wonderland to remain closed after man died at Six Flags Over Georgia

Officials did not confirm how death, injuries occurred, witnesses described watching him come out of his seat

Two roller-coasters at Canada's Wonderland will remain closed after an incident on a similar ride at a Six Flags in Georgia earlier this week left one man dead and several others injured, the amusement park said Friday.

The Behemoth and Leviathan closures will be in place for "the time being," Canada's Wonderland president Christopher Mortensen in a statement on the amusement park's website Friday.

"We will share updates as more information becomes available," he said.

On Monday, the two rollercoasters were temporarily closed "out of an abundance of caution" after the death at Six Flags Over Georgia. Officials did not confirm how the man died or how the others were injured, but witnesses described watching him come out of his seat on a ride.

As a result of the incident, Six Flags, which owns Canada's Wonderland, closed nine roller-coasters across six amusement parks on Monday.

Mortensen said the Behemoth and Leviathan are closed while "efforts to understand the circumstances" of the incident continue. All other rides are operating regularly.

"Our thoughts and heartfelt condolences remain with the individual involved, their family, friends and loved ones," he said. "We also continue to keep the guests and team members affected by this tragic event in our thoughts."

Mortensen added the safety of guests and team members remains the "highest priority."

"We maintain rigorous inspection, maintenance and operational procedures that meet or exceed industry standards," he said, adding rides undergo daily, weekly, monthly and annual inspections and team members receive extensive training in operating and maintaining attractions.

Millions of guests safely ride and enjoy attractions at Six Flags parks every year, according to Mortensen.

"While serious incidents of this nature are exceedingly rare, we never take responsibility to our guests for granted," he said.

The death on Monday would be at least the seventh at the Georgia park. It also comes less than two weeks after Six Flags Magic Mountain, in Southern California, announced that it is retiring its famous X2 roller-coaster amid lawsuits alleging serious brain injury caused by the ride.
