Deadly fire took place in Villeray—Saint-Michel—Parc-Extension apartment building
Two people have died following a fatal fire at a Montreal apartment building on Saturday morning.
At around 7:30 a.m., Montreal police spokesperson Manuel Couture said officers received 911 calls reporting a fire in an apartment building on 42nd Street near 24th Avenue in the Villeray—Saint-Michel—Parc-Extension borough.
Couture said several residents were able to evacuate the building.
However, firefighters discovered two bodies in the apartment where the fire is believed to have originated. The deaths were confirmed at the scene.
Two people were transported to hospital with serious injuries. Four others sustained injuries and were treated by paramedics on site and did not require hospitalization.
Couture added that due to the deaths, the investigation into the cause and circumstances of the fatal blaze has been transferred to the police's arson unit.
The cause of the fire has not yet been determined.
