Friday night incident left 42-year-old man dead in northern Manitoba community

Pimicikamak Cree Nation Chief David Monias says one person has been arrested following a shooting in the northern Manitoba community that left one person dead on Friday night.

RCMP are interviewing the individual and the investigation is ongoing, Monias said in a statement posted to social media late Saturday night.

The community still remains under lockdown. The chief reminded residents to be patient and follow lockdown orders until police are done investigating.

"The safety and security of our community remains our highest priority," Monias wrote.

RCMP officers were notified of a seriously injured person on a main road into the First Nation around 9:30 p.m. on Friday, police said in a Saturday afternoon news release.

Pimicikamak Cree Nation under lockdown after gunshots fired, 1 person dead: chief

Officers found two people at the scene, one of whom had a gunshot wound, police said. The other person wasn't injured.

A 42-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

RCMP encouraged residents to stay vigilant and report any suspicious behaviour to the local Cross Lake detachment at 204-676-2600.
